Okay, see that Ebmaj7?
The melody note is D...

After playing the pickup notes, just prior to playing that D
melody, play a C#
with a Dmaj7
chord for one beat and follow that with the D
with the Ebmaj7
chord. Actually, what you are doing is delaying the melody by one beat,
thus creating anticipation in the listener's mind. Remember, we are
approaching the actual melody note by one half step below. This is a
chord substitution of a different sort because we are really
substituting the original chord temporarily before playing it. This is
very effective. You can achieve some extremely tasteful results by
doing this as you apply different chord voicings to that C#
and D. That's
where an exploration of piano
chord voicings is worthy of
consideration because your mind will spin with possibilities and
excitement as you become familiar with more and more of these...

I'd like to encourage you to apply the half-step substitution technique
above to something you play regularly. Find a major 7th chord in
your tune that lasts for a few beats, and then substitute the major 7th
chord whose root is a half step below. Listen to the effect you get
do this. Sometimes the
substitution will sound more tasteful than other times and you will
most likely want to use it sparingly.. Again, though,
it's important to realize that voicings, as mentioned above, can have a
great impact on how you can get them to work extremely well...
