Piano Chords Chord Substitutions

Dave Hi, Dave here...

Let's take a good look at those first four bars of Misty shown below...

Try the following chord technique to see if it doesn't turn heads in the room:

Piano Chords Chord Substitutions

Okay, see that Ebmaj7? The melody note is D...

After playing the pickup notes, just prior to playing that D melody, play a C# with a Dmaj7 chord for one beat and follow that with the D with the Ebmaj7 chord. Actually, what you are doing is delaying the melody by one beat, thus creating anticipation in the listener's mind. Remember, we are approaching the actual melody note by one half step below. This is a chord substitution of a different sort because we are really substituting the original chord temporarily before playing it. This is very effective. You can achieve some extremely tasteful results by doing this as you apply different chord voicings to that C# and D.  That's where an exploration of piano chord voicings is worthy of consideration because your mind will spin with possibilities and excitement as you become familiar with more and more of these...

Also, if you would like to learn more about basic chords as well as chord substitutions, check out the very popular Power Piano Chords, which devotes three entire lessons on the topic of chord substitution, entitled How To Create Unlimited Original Chord Progressions Using Chord Substitutions (Parts 1,2, & 3). Actually, you can see a description of each lesson in this great collection of lessons when you visit this page. It has lots of information every pianist should know for sure (instant access online, too - no shipping required).

I'd like to encourage you to apply the half-step substitution technique above to something you play regularly. Find a major 7th chord in your tune that lasts for a few beats, and then substitute the major 7th chord whose root is a half step below. Listen to the effect you get when you do this. Sometimes the substitution will sound more tasteful than other times and you will most likely want to use it sparingly.. Again, though, it's important to realize that voicings, as mentioned above, can have a great impact on how you can get them to work extremely well...
